Reasons for failing MOT

The Most Common Causes of MOT Failures in Maidstone

Your car failing its MOT is always a stressful experience. It’s inconvenient, time-consuming, and means paying for repairs that you might not have expected. If you’re worried about an upcoming MOT, this post will show you the most common reasons why cars fail MOT testing in Maidstone so you can be more prepared.

What is an MOT?

The Motor Operations Test (MOT) is an examination of the safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle. It’s a regulated test that can only be carried out by authorised centres (like ours here at King Street Motor Services).

What does an MOT include?

There are a number of environmental standards checks, including checks of the emissions and fuel systems. However, there are also extensive checks to other components, including:

  • Lights
  • Steering and suspension
  • Horn, seats and seatbelts
  • Brakes, wheels and tyres
  • Doors and mirrors
  • Wipers and washer bottle

The top reasons for MOT failure

Luckily, most of the reasons a car fails its MOT are quick and affordable to fix. Here are the top reasons cars fail their MOT test here in Maidstone:

  • Unsafe tyre tread: the tread needs to be at least 1.6mm to be deemed safe, but we do recommend getting tyres replaced before it gets this low.
  • Worn brake pads – these should be 1.5mm thick at minimum to avoid limiting the effectiveness of your brakes.
  • Dim or broken headlamps – there is a legal limit on how high or low these can be to keep your car safe. Too high, they impair other drivers; too low and you won’t be seen safely on roads.
  • Weakened brake discs – this affects your ability to stop and could cause an accident.
  • Damaged windscreen wipers – if your wipers don’t clear your window properly, your car will fail.
  • Windscreen damage – any chips or scratches are also not acceptable.
  • Unreadable registration plate – it’s a legal requirement to display your licence plate so if you don’t have one, or yours is worn and unreadable, your car will fail.
  • Broken brake lights – if your brake lights are out, your car will fail. We often don’t know they’re out until someone tells us, so ask someone to check for you if you’re unsure.
